What we do

African-Centered Diasporic Healing

Alafiani is an African-centered mental health and historical healing platform. We begin with African worldviews and lived experience, then integrate evidence-based psychological science - trauma studies, migration and refugee mental health, community and liberation psychology, epidemiology, and public health - to serve African peoples worldwide and to open dialogue with other diasporic communities shaped by displacement, colonization, and historical oppression.

Who this holds

We are built from what they could not break. Shared histories of survival, resilience, migration, and systemic displacement forged us - but they do not own us. This space holds every community that carried the fire.

Our approach

  • Honours historical memory without reducing people to trauma
  • Centres cultural identity, community healing, and liberation
  • Integrates indigenous frameworks with modern, evidence-informed care
  • Respects that each diasporic community has its own distinct culture and history

Bridging diasporas

Africa is the foundation. The diaspora is the bridge.

Comparative and cross-cultural mental health research shows that displacement, colonization, forced migration, war, and historical oppression leave measurable imprints on mental health across generations. We hold African peoples at the center of our work, and we invite thoughtful, evidence-based dialogue with other communities whose mental health has been shaped by these same forces - without collapsing distinct histories into a single story.

Communities in dialogue

  • Indigenous communities
  • Caribbean populations
  • Refugee communities
  • Armenian diaspora
  • South Asian diaspora
  • Middle Eastern diaspora
  • Pacific Islander diaspora

Each community carries its own history and medicine. We compare thoughtfully, never interchangeably.

Our story

Wellness is not new to us.
It was always ours.

From the continent to every place our people were taken, carried, or chose to go, our ancestors understood that healing happens in story, in song, in soil, in community. Alafiani draws from African psychology - the indigenous frameworks that held us long before Western frameworks existed.

We exist for the first-generation immigrant carrying two worlds. For the descendant of the enslaved still untangling a stolen lineage. For the Caribbean auntie, the Afro-Latin cousin, the Black British student, the continental elder. For anyone whose body remembers a history the standard frame refuses to name.

For all of us

For the women, the men, the children coming after us.

Healing was never meant for one of us alone. Alafiani is built for every generation - the elders, the partners, the parents, and the little ones inheriting what we choose to carry forward.

For the men holding it all.

Space to set it down. Tools to name what was never named. Brotherhood that does not flinch.

For the children watching.

We tend ourselves so the next generation inherits joy, language, and rest - not only resilience.

Our mission

African-Centered Diasporic healing.

Alafiani Collective is an African-centered mental health and historical healing platform. We study and hold how migration, displacement, colonization, historical trauma, culture, identity, and resilience shape the psychological well-being of African peoples worldwide - and we welcome dialogue with other diasporic communities whose mental health has been shaped by the same forces. Africa is the foundation. The diaspora is the bridge. Shared historical trauma and cultural resilience are the focus.
